Intention Activity: Creating with the Body

One idea from the book that I loved was the Dallowinian Party. I loved the idea of having the students dress up as characters and then having them interact with each other while staying true to character. I think this kind of activity is super fun for students because everyone believes in the shared world together. There are two different ways I would do this in a classroom. The first is to take a play or text (or several) that we'd been reading, such as a few Shakespeare plays, and have each student as a different character. Then I'd incorporate a few situations similar to what happens in the plays and have the characters react realistically. The second way I'd do this is have the students invent their own characters, maybe spend a few class periods developing them, and then bring them all together to interact with each other. Then I'd include a few pretend situations and turn it into a mystery, requiring the characters to work together to solve it. The goal is for them to do everything in character and thus discover new things about the characters they portray.

  1. We were able to be in a group in class when we share about our ideas, and I still think this is such a great way to use Dallowinian Party. After a creation of character is so great because we often think we have most of the details figured out, but it isn't until we have to interact and use them in a context like this that we realize that there might be some holes. So constant development while they are in role is such a great idea.
