Textual Poaching

Project viewed here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VohPp-8PRdg8uL_QFDBRM-lz4WbL_aNYJq_B5oggFU4/edit?usp=sharing My idea for this project was to take a beloved text that I feel like has defined my life and my generation. Books are an integral and wonderful part of my life and my identity, and always have been. Since I was a kid I've been finding excuses to sneak off and read books and get lost in the fantasy worlds they provide. Harry Potter was the spearhead of children's literature as we know it today, and they remain some of the most intricate, well written books in children's literature. However, from the beginning, it was thought of as a "boy book." Joanne Rowling was asked to invent a middle initial for herself so they could market the book with her initials, so that the world wouldn't know that a woman wrote a book with a male protagonist. I decided to play with this idea. What if the spearhead of children's literature had featured a female pro...

Completed Seat Assignment

Assignment:   Using only the pictures in your camera roll, retell a classic fairytale (i.e. sleeping beauty, cinderella, beauty and the beast, hansel and gretel) in a modern-day setting. Make sure to use at least 1 photo from your recently deleted folder. This story should not be more than 20 pictures, or less than 5. You may add captions to photos as long as they are fewer than 10 words.  Be sure that your story has a clear beginning, middle, and end. Process Piece

NOTE: I couldn't figure out how to turn the sound off, so just mute the video when you watch it. Thanks!! View Project Here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QA13v2yjEl9E7Dep1yaQrq_8NbfeEhg8/view?usp=sharing  Making the video was pretty straightforward. I knew that making a smoothie is something that typically makes a lot of noise so it would be interesting to see what it's like without any sound at all. Do our minds automatically fill in what we think the blender should sound like? Are we surprised when we hear no sound? In the process of creating this video, I found myself thinking about sound and how it changes an experience. Because there is no sound in this video we notice the absence of what we think should be there. It also allowed me to notice what it looks like when the different ingredients blend together- the color changes and you can really focus on the process of the ingredients combining into a smoothie, which sometimes is overlooked because the sound of the blen...

Seat Assignment

I n 22 minutes in class today, go to wikipedia, click "Random Article" and then create an art piece about the subject matter in the article. This art piece may be one of three things: a poem, a drawing, or a sculpture using things you can find in the Nelke Theater.  Material: Anything you can find in the Nelke Process: Must be created in the Nelke in 22 minutes Form: Poem, drawing, or sculpture Content: A random wikipedia page (must be the FIRST article that pops up). Context: Yourself and how you choose to interpret the content in the article

Medium Specificity

View Project HERE: https://youtu.be/jAfo-Cjws4I  I chose to make an iMovie to create a video with memories of my family. Back in 2018 we had a family reunion and I took a bunch of videos asking them questions. I meant to compile them together for years, but it never ended up happening. I’m glad this project allowed me to finally get around to it! I hadn’t used iMovie in years and so it was awesome to foray into it, probe the corners and see what the new, updated version of iMovie could do. I actually made the entire movie on my phone because that’s where all my videos were stored, and that was completely new for me. Affordances: I was surprised how easy it was to use iMovie on an iPhone. The layout is very simple which makes it easy to find and use different features, like cutting clips, adding text, and adding music. There is a video app I use frequently, Splice, but that one doesn’t offer as much freedom as iMovie and makes you pay for extra perks like music. I think...

Ode to an Orange on Instagram

View project HERE: https://www.instagram.com/naomi_the_orange/  After the text from "Ode to an Orange," I thought about how the text is all about someone's experience with oranges. He engages with the orange, notices everything about its shape, size color, lifespan, and all of the emotions that come with it. The text was an in-depth look on an orange, but I thought it would be interesting if we looked at the world from the perspective of the orange itself. What might the orange notice that we didn't? What might it notice or discover? Would it come to conclusions that I didn't? I also thought that Woiwode's text created an incredibly beautiful image of an orange, using all five senses and allowing the image of the orange to come alive in my mind. To me, instagram is also a place of beautiful images. Through the use of filters, angles, and captions, people present a beautiful, sometimes unrealistic picture of themselves. So I decided to set up an instagram accou...
